Sage Metering is pleased to announce that the SAGE RIO Industrial Thermal Mass Flow Meter received ATEX Zone 1 approval. Zone 1 is defined as a place where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occasionally occur during normal operation. The RIO’s classification (II 2 G Ex d IIB + H2 T6 Gb) ensures that the meter is suitable for measuring gas flow at heavy industrial and environmental applications in hazardous locations.

The RIO offers the same performance as the Sage Prime with added ATEX Zone 1 Flameproof approvals. Sage was recently honored with its third Flow Control Magazine Innovation Award for its In-Situ Calibration Check which is a revolutionary new process ensuring the Sage meter is calibrated while still in the field. The RIO offers the onsite calibration verification along with wide turndown, drift free operation and much more.

The RIO has a bright, high contrast, photo-emissive OLED display in an explosion proof, dual-sided NEMA 4X enclosure, revealing flow rate, totalized flow and temperature. The rear compartment is completely separated from the electronics, and has easy-to-access and well-marked terminals making customer wiring simple. It is powered by 24 VDC (115/230 VAC optional) with low power dissipation under 2.5 watts (e.g. under 100 mA at 24 VDC). Standard outputs include 4–20mA pulsed outputs of totalized flow and full Modbus compliant RS485 RTU communications, or optional HART communications. Sage RIO’s T6 rating makes it suitable for gases with ignition temperature as low as 185°F (85°C).

Common industrial applications where the RIO can be beneficial are flare gas monitoring, landfill gas flow, digester gas flow measurement and natural gas measurement (combustion efficiency to save energy). These applications are performed in various industries, including: petrochemical, chemical processing, food and beverage, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and wastewater.
